‘Tis the week for our unscripted conversation & recommendations!
We have an unscripted convo (rather than writing) about once a month. During this convo, we ridicule each other while discussing books and other things we are currently loving. Why? Because we’ve never felt so alive.
🤓 Awkward? Yes.
😬 Cringy? Mmmhmm.
🤩 Fun? The most.
If you typically read—rather than listen to—our stuff, you can listen to our convo by pressing the “play” button near the top of the post.

Here are a few highlights and the promised links from this week’s convo:
1:05 — We introduce our live studio audience
2:07 —The “Pedigree of Paula” moment is given to someone who displays class and character in a way that reminds us of our mother. This month, our own mother Paula nominates “Susan.” Way to be, Susan!
4:10 — We discuss the smut, a/k/a romance novel, that Jenny challenged us to read: Autumn Nights by Willow Aster. Kara made it through the whole thing; Bethany about half. Bottom line, it’s not for us.
Description:
He's a hot football star and a sexy-as-sin single dad. Zac Ledger is everything I never knew I wanted.
A prince on a white horse swooping in to save the day...
Isn't that every girl's dream? Maybe for some, but I've never expected to find my own happily ever after.
I've made one bad dating choice after another, and it doesn't help that my only example of marriage is my dad leaving my mother before I was even born.
I'll never be a believer in fairy tales.
So, imagine my surprise when I meet Zac Ledger at my sister's wedding.
He is the total opposite of my usual type: gorgeous, confident, and genuine.
He's also athletic, and I am so not.
They call him the GOAT in the NFL...and I didn't even know what either acronym meant until my sister told me.
But there's something about him.
One drink.
One dance.
And I'm ready to believe that there are actually good guys out there.
That is, until I overhear him on the phone and I realize he's just like every other jerk I've dated.
When he hires me as his interior designer to come work on his new house, I resist, but he's persistent.
My goal is to finish the job and keep him at a distance.
But I'm not prepared for the real Zac Ledger or the way he dotes on his adorable little girl.
And when the renovation dust begins to settle, I realize there is more to Zac than his NFL accolades, and maybe, just maybe, he will prove to be the one man in my life that chooses to stick around.
10:26 — We “turn a phrase like Truman” — “Risk it for a biscuit.” Kara risked it by uprooting a dying tree to replant.
13:55 — Kara gives an update on her attempts to abstain from Starbucks (one of Kara’s 24 changes for 2024 that she’s still going strong on) and how much money she’s saved by not showing up (testing the guru theory that your daily latte can actually make a difference in your finances). Kara confesses that her friend busted her at Starbucks this month, but there were extenuating circumstances. “I don’t know if he believed me or not, but it’s my truth.” Kara also announces that she’s choosing to reinvest some of her Starbucks money in the future of Knock It Off.
19:07 — Tayvis talk. They were just spotted eating at a restaurant in Florida. Also, Taylor drops a re-record in an episode of The Handmaid’s Tale. We talk possible private engagement and who would know. Their “butler dog” would definitely know.
22:25 — “Sweaty Betty & Dare to Kare!” — we give updates on exercise challenges and wins. Kara talks about how her 15-year running streak has been in serious jeopardy due to an injury. Bethany is mad about the Florida heat—she recently decided that taking a walk break during a run is smart. Our friend Ashlee just got a PR in a 5k! Bethany and Kara fought over who would get to pace her, but the winner was clear (especially after Bethany quadruple booked herself that morning). Also, Kara’s daughter had an amazing race. We are so proud!!
39:10 — “Ask Bethany!” — A fan-favorite segment that allows our Knockers to ask Bethany anything you want and receive an honest, unfiltered response! Leave it in the caaaaaaawments!
49:05 — “Taste of Kara”— Kara tried an iced lemon espresso while admiring her plants. Our Substack friend
just recommended it on her newsletter .Kara also just went on a self-guided “Taste of St. Augustine” and loved it. She highly recommends every stop along the way.

54:00 — Bethany wants everyone to know that her Ridgebackandread Instagram page is defunct. But you should give her a follow anyway!
