‘Tis the week for our unscripted conversation & recommendations!
We have an unscripted convo (rather than writing) about once a month. During this convo, we ridicule each other while discussing books and other things we are currently loving. Why? Because we’ve never felt so alive.
🤓 Awkward? Yes.
😬 Cringy? Mmmhmm.
🤩 Fun? The most.
If you typically read—rather than listen to—our stuff, you can listen to our convo by pressing the “play” button near the top of the post.

Here are a few highlights and the promised links from this week’s convo:
1:00 — Reflections from Kara’s annual Halloween party.

3:09 — We review The Lost Bookshop by Evie Woods. Genre: magical fiction. We both read this one for book club this month.
DESCRIPTION:
On a quiet street in Dublin, a lost bookshop is waiting to be found…
For too long, Opaline, Martha and Henry have been the side characters in their own lives.
But when a vanishing bookshop casts its spell, these three unsuspecting strangers will discover that their own stories are every bit as extraordinary as the ones found in the pages of their beloved books. And by unlocking the secrets of the shelves, they find themselves transported to a world of wonder… where nothing is as it seems.
Bottom line for us: it felt promising, but in the end, we both lacked the imagination needed to really appreciate the magic.
5:27 — Bethany reveals her family’s reactions to her labor of love and also her decision to cut some bangs. Have you heard about the microbang trend? How does it make you feel? Let us know in the caaaawments!
8:14 — Have dry skin or other skin issues? This Amazon Tub Faucet Water Filter could be a life saver. Initial impressions are good but Kara will report back.
11:05 — Kara gives an update on her attempts to abstain from Starbucks (one of Kara’s 24 changes for 2024) and how much money she’s saved by not showing up (testing the guru theory that your daily latte can actually make a difference in your finances)
15:10 — We “turn a phrase like Truman” — “We are of a similar vintage.” “The cat that got the cream.”
17:04 — Travis talk. The Chiefs game was playing in Taylor’s concert venue; Jason sticks up for his bro; and Travis’s home was burglarized.
21:00 — “Sweaty Betty & Dare to Kare!” — we give updates on exercise challenges and wins. Kara kept up her running streak and showed up to PureBarre. Bethany ran with her dog who went ditch diving.
25:08 — “Ask Bethany!” — A segment that allows our Knockers to ask Bethany anything you want and receive an honest, unfiltered response! Have a submission? Leave it in the caaaaaaawments!
31:35 — “Taste of Kara”— continuing with our Gilded Age obsession and attempting to make it somehow relevant to everyday life, Kara presents three “High Society Selections” and “Peasant Pivot Options” for items she’s currently into. Let’s be honest: Kara mainly employs the peasant pivot option.
High Society Selection: The fact that the McAllisters in Home Alone can afford automatic timers for their lights.
(LIFE CHANGING) Peasant Pivot Option: Amazon $12.99 for a photocell light sensor. It has two input plugs to accommodate multiple strands of Christmas lights. Set it to 2, 4, or 6 hours after the sun goes down and forget about it- lights go on and off automatically! Kara can’t imagine Christmas lights without this thing now. It’s still going strong in the third season of use.
High Society Selection: Flameless window candle with wood base- Hearth and Hand with Magnolia for Target - $14.99 each. It’s on a 6 hour timer.
Peasant Pivot Option: Amazon - 6 for $28.99 and they have suction cups to stay on the window. These have dusk to dawn sensors- set and forget!
High Society Selection: Gold Outdoor Nutcracker from Frontgate- $559 (shared by Chrislovesjulia on Instagram).
Peasant Pivot Option: DIY spraypainted Outdoor Nutcracker (by Gretchen Black on Instagram). Buy this guy for $59.98 at Home Depot, buy yourself a 5-gallon bucket, for $4.00, screw them together, and spray paint the color of your choice. We’d go gold, but Gretchen went blue to match her home.
39:00 — The “Pedigree of Paula” moment is given to someone who displays class and character in a way that reminds us of our mother. This week, it goes to our own mother for searching high and low to make our childhood Christmas extra special by coming through with a Talkboy for each us.
