Catch a Case
Let yourself go; remembering Diane; Starbucks woes; Dance with Somebody; penpals; eggonomics; Taylor Swift's new album drops; mitral prolapse; unqualified coaching; creepy TVs; & modern gentlemen
‘Tis the week for our unscripted conversation & recommendations!
We have an unscripted convo (rather than writing) about once a month. During this convo, we ridicule each other while discussing books and other things we are currently loving. Why? Because we’ve never felt so alive.
You can listen to our convo by pressing the “play” button near the top of the post.

Here are a few highlights and the promised links from this week’s convo:
1:05 — Kara’s daughter is officially embarrassed by Kara’s everyday life choices. She shouldn’t be surprised since she’s letting herself go. Bethany jockeyed for an invite to a banger of a princess party and it paid off.
4:25 — We are both so sad that Diane Keaton has passed. Check out Goodbye, Diane for our favorite quotes, both in film and IRL. For an 80’s classic starring Diane, check out ‘Baby Boom.’ Also, ‘Annie Hall’ was her early Emmy-winning performance. Both are on Tubi at the moment - download it for free!
8:00 — If you missed It’s F.A.C.! last week, give it a glance if you want to understand why we are the way we are.
8:45 — Starbucks announced plans to close underperforming stores and eliminate 900 corporate jobs. Ooof. Bethany thinks the CEO needs to read Power vs. Force by David Hawkins.
12:30 — Bethany recommends Dance With Somebody by Erika Snyder. In the book, Erika invites readers into the raw, real, and often unseen world of life alongside a professional athlete. Married to Adam Snyder-who spent a decade in the NFL, most of it with the San Francisco 49ers-Erika shares the highs and heartbreaks of their journey, from the thrill of big wins to the ache of loneliness, constant transitions, and the weight of raising a family in the spotlight.
14:30 — After listening to Well on My Way to a Couple Buicks, Bethany bought Want and plans to gift it to Kara after she’s done. Yikes.
17:20 — Farming with Millennials! (Kara is a millennial gardener now and Bethany is raising chickens.) Kara’s pumpkins are dead and she’s still in mourning. Her neighbors gifted three pumpkins to her son and now they’re all penpals. Kara is happy for others who can grow so many pumpkins, they start a whole business. Her new obsession of growing roses up and over her garage like the house in Father of the Bride is going well. She’s training them with this floral wiring for the time being.
All 6 of Bethany’s chicks are alive and well despite the odds. They laid their first eggs!! She has started a ‘lay table’ where her family is tracking the “Eggononics” of their investment (approximately $800) vs. how many eggs the chicks produce. So far, each egg has cost $266.66 but things can only go up from here.
23:45 — We “turn a phrase like Truman.” This month, we discuss what it means to “catch a case” and also what it means to be a “shrinking violet.”
26:55 —The “Pedigree of Paula” moment is given to someone who displays class and character in a way that reminds us of our mother. Bethany revokes the award (for the first time ever!) from previous (fictional) recipient Serena from ‘The Handmaid’s Tale.’ She also gives the award this month to Donna Kelce for repp’ing son Travis and future daughter-in-law Taylor Swift on the sidelines of Monday Night Football in Jacksonville on Oct. 6.
31:45 — Tayvis talk. Taylor released ‘The Life of a Showgirl.’ Kara cannot get the songs out of her head and it’s driving her to the brink. Bethany wants everyone to know that is takes precisely the length of ‘The Fate of Ophelia’ to get from her house to Kara’s. Taylor also announced a 6-part docuseries on Disney+ of the behind-the-scenes of the Eras tour. Bethany is thrilled; Kara is intrigued but feels overloaded by all the content. Bethany reminds us that Taylor is very generous with her billions. Bethany also wants parents to exercise discernment when it comes to buying the various album styles with tiny variations.
38:45 — “Sweaty Betty & Dare to Kare!” — we give updates on exercise challenges and wins. Kara’s running streak is alive but she’s otherwise struggling. She needs to set her sights on a 5k to get motivated, but she doesn’t want to do one with Bethany. Kara is sticking with PureBarre also. Bethany is the unofficial, unqualified conditioning coach of her kid’s soccer team.
42:30 — “Ask Bethany!” — A fan-favorite segment that allows our Knockers to ask Bethany anything you want and receive an honest, unfiltered response! This week, she clears up a misconception about the term ‘mitral prolapse.’ Have a submission for Ask Bethany? Leave it in the caaaaaaawments or slide into our DMs on the ‘gram.
46:30 — “Taste of Kara”— Kara was influenced hard to buy the StanbyMe mobile TV. After 6 months, she gives an honest review. Bethany feels that it is remarkably similar to the creepy TV in Casper that follows Carrigan Crittenden.

Also, GQ’s list of 125 Rules for Modern Gentlemen (found courtesy of The Purse) is quite solid. But, Kara has a hard disagreement with #100. She also finds #60 to be sus. #124 is a hard yes. Her husband NAILS #125.
50:50 — Kara spotted the KNOCK IT OFF phrase IRL at the soccer fields. Also, did you check out our thoughts on being catfished by Netflix through ‘Unknown Number’? We have a lot of them.
