You're Having a Fantasy!
Retirement talk; Taco Bell runs; Elf on the Shelf; Bearistas; trellises; Eggonomics; Snoop news; Tayvis talk; shoes off homes; and holiday madness
‘Tis the week for our unscripted conversation & recommendations!
We have an unscripted convo (rather than writing) about once a month. During this convo, we ridicule each other while discussing books and other things we are currently loving. Why? Because we’ve never felt so alive.
You can listen to our convo by pressing the “play” button near the top of the post.

Here are a few highlights and the promised links from this week’s convo with special guests Paula and Sheez:
1:15 — Bethany introduces our guests and asks Paula what it feels like to retire after 44 years of nursing.
2:44 — Kara talks about an intriguing run: a 50k in Washington DC in which the participants had to stop at 9 different Taco Bells and eat menu items from each location. Seems like a worthy cause.
4:05 — We talk Elf on the Shelf. We are not fans because it’s been so overdone by humanity. We learned this week from fellow Substacker Sara that the book responsible for starting the whole craze was self published. Could it be the most successful self-publishing job of all time? Some estimate the empire to be worth $100 million now.
6:48 — Starbucks news. Kara long ago ended her experiment of abstaining from Starbucks. We talk about the recent craze for the plastic “Bearistas.” Paula tries to pump the Dutch Bros chain.
9:00 — Farming with Millennials! (Kara is a millennial gardener now and Bethany is raising chickens.) Kara still mourns the loss of her pumpkins but is currently in the process of drying out 3593 seeds for next season with very high hopes. Her obsession of growing roses up and over her garage like the house in Father of the Bride is going so well that she built a trellis using this tutorial. The floral wiring will no longer cut it.

Bethany has checked out on the Eggonomics of her investment. In her words, she’s a “fair-weather fan” like most things in life. However, she continues to work on her art dot project. Lucky for the Knockers, Kara snapped a pic of the lay table at Bethany’s house so we can see that they are now down to $6.38 per egg.
13:05 — Snoop News. Snoop Dogg is now narrating Animal Planet.
He also crashed the Lakers practice. And, Team USA announced him as the first ever honorary coach. Bethany’s addition to this week’s Snoop News was actually an AI dupe so hers doesn’t count. A good rule of thumb: if something has “AI” in the title, it’s probably AI.
16:40 — We “turn a phrase like Truman.” This month, Paula introduces the phrase: “In theory.”
17:33 —The “Pedigree of Paula” moment is given to someone who displays class and character in a way that reminds us of our mother. This month, it goes to Sheez for showing up to Florida from California to support our mom during her retirement.
19:45 — Tayvis Talk. We discuss the relationship between Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce as if we know them personally. Travis’s team did not have a great season. He’s looking down these days. Taylor just released a six-part docu-series on Disney+. The wedding date and venue have been picked. Donna Kelce is joining the cast of Traitors for season 4.
28:56 — “Sweaty Betty & Dare to Kare!” — we give updates on exercise challenges and wins. Paula and Sheez got lots of steps in during their tour of St. Augustine and the lighthouse. Kara’s running streak is alive. She ran back-to-back 5ks with her daughter as part of her holiday traditions. She’s gearing up for a January exercise challenge at work. Bethany has been active at Orange Theory 6 out of 20 days this month. She needs some motivation.
33:10 — “Ask Bethany!” — A fan-favorite segment that allows our Knockers to ask Bethany anything you want and receive an honest, unfiltered response! This week, she solves the problem of what to do when you’re invited to a party without realizing it’s a shoes-off home. Have a submission for Ask Bethany? Leave it in the caaaaaaawments or slide into our DMs on the ‘gram.
39:20 — “Taste of Kara”— Kara really enjoyed the 1996 musical comedy Everyone Says I Love You (currently on Prime). It has great star power and the humor reminds Kara of Mixed Nuts. Kara also discusses “Oh. What. Fun.” on Prime. It’s very popular with the boomers. Kara liked some parts but did not appreciate the obvious main character flaws. Bethany and Kara appreciate the kind Substack community response to Kara’s one and only attempt to write “in the feels.”
46:50 — The KNOCK IT OFF phrase IRL was heard by Bethany in Mixed Nuts by a disgruntled pregnant woman who yells “Knock it off! You’re having a fantasy!” Also, we regret to inform you that the movie is not available on any service at the moment. That feels like a travesty during the holiday season.
