‘Tis the week for our unscripted conversation & recommendations!
We have an unscripted convo (rather than writing) about once a month. During this convo, we ridicule each other while discussing books and other things we are currently loving. Why? Because we’ve never felt so alive.
🤓 Awkward? Yes.
😬 Cringy? Mmmhmm.
🤩 Fun? The most.
If you typically read—rather than listen to—our stuff, you can listen to our convo by pressing the “play” button near the top of the post.
Here are a few highlights and the promised links from this week’s convo:
1:14 — Life updates and stories (Kara talks about her plants; Bethany discusses her family’s failed attempts to play board games and pivot to “cooperative games” — the one they bought is called Castle Panic)
6:50 — Kara gives an update on her attempts to abstain from Starbucks (one of Kara’s 24 changes for 2024) and how much money she’s saved by not showing up (testing the guru theory that your daily latte can actually make a difference in your finances) (“The gurus say . . . stocks are on sale right now, keep buying.”)
10:00 — The “Pedigree of Paula” moment is given to someone who displays class and character in a way that reminds us of our mother. This week, it goes to American gymnasts Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles, who literally bowed down to Brazilian Rebeca Andrade for winning gold on her individual floor routine.
11:50 — We “turn a phrase like Truman” (“Don’t bust one on it.”) (“She is as naive as a first-day fawn.”) (“She got hemmed up.”) (The book Bethany refers to: All the President’s Men by Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward)
17:09 — “Ask Bethany!” — A segment that allows our Knockers to ask Bethany anything you want and receive an honest, unfiltered response! Have a submission? Leave it in the caaaaaaawments! (“This is totally for sport.”) (“I would initiate emergency response.”)
23:00 — We discuss the Snoop Dog / Olympics crossover (“He’s one of those people that shows up in your life, unannounced, at random times.”)
25:26 — We talk about the youngest and oldest olympians competing in the 2024 games, thanks to
on Substack for this content.28:16 — Check out
by for some great satire! We both enjoyed his thoughts on the process of buying a pretzel at a theme park.29:08 — “Taste of Kara”— a few things Kara’s into at the moment.
Check out Pink Cottage Studio on Etsy for beautiful original watercolors of homes.
Kara accidentally read a romantic comedy (that she likes to call “smut”). To each is own, but she wasn’t a fan of Funny Story by Emily Henry. (Kara now knows that if something is described as “spicy,” it is actually smut. Time.com tells you to embrace your love for romance novels.)
The Disneyland basement makes us both uncomfortable.
Check out Madison Humphrey on Instagram for great satire
39:50— We both continue down the Gilded Age rabbit hole. Bethany is now devouring the audiobook of Astor: The Rise and Fall of an American Fortune by Anderson Cooper and Katherine Howe and simultaneously reading Vanderbilt: The Rise and Fall of an American Dynasty also by Anderson Cooper and Katherine Howe. Kara is reading A Well Behaved Woman: A Novel of the Vanderbilts by Therese Anne Fowler
45:05 — We preview next week’s piece for Knock it Off

I like the way y’all change up your stories, never boring! I look forward to the next one!
my take on the ask Bethany question is that the 70 something fitness enthusiast just didn't have good form for her core movements LOL 😆
Fun listen for my morning commute as always and Kara- get well soon
