I can relate to this. One time, fresh out of college and in my first year of “big girl jobbing”, I bought a $200 ($300-400 today’s dollar?!) pair of Burberry sunglasses. I was immensely proud of my ability to buy those. Forget the fact that I had thousands of dollars accruing interest in student loan debt!
I accidentally left them out at a family member’s house and the dog (not the same one as mentioned in above sorry) ate them up. I was so peeved, I haven’t bought a pair above $25 since. Mainly because I lose them too easily but also don’t want to stomach that sort of monetary loss again.
Kara do you still have the shoes? You should frame them in a glass box or something and put them up on display in your house. That would be a great story for guests if your heart could take telling it (and looking at it daily). Okay, that doesn't sound like such a good idea now that I think about it, lol. I bought a drone a few years ago to help me make better video for my Youtube channel. It started having problems after a few months of having it and since I bought it in the States and lived in the Philippines, I couldn't get it sent back to have it fixed without paying an astronomical price for shipping. Ugh, so frustrating looking back at it. I only used it like 3 times and was hoping to use it for years.
I do still have them! I can hardly bare to break them out of the closet, let alone stare at those mistakes day after day. Too funny! Oh man that drone story is a bummer. I actually have a drone story of my own . . . my boss bought one and allowed me to be the first pilot. Welp, first time I flew it, I accidentally crashed it on the wall. It fell between the the wall and a marble facade, never to be seen again. You win some, you lose some. I'm not sure he's ever been so mad at me. Hah! Thanks for reading, Thomas, and for the drone story!
My first large purchase I regret would probably be my four-wheeler from my early mom days. I got a large bonus from work used that as the down payment and then I did have to eventually sell it just to make some money back from other expenses happening in my more grown up years. I do however have a large purchase I don't and won't ever regret, and that is my peloton bike which I use practically every day. it has changed my life for the better as I enjoy fitness more than I ever did in my earlier years.
I’ll second a solid purchase of fitness investments! Theres a Gandhi quote I see at work often: “It is health that is the real wealth, not pieces of gold and silver.”
What a heartbreak, Kara!!! Just in case this ever happens again (and I hope it does not), call your credit card company. Purchases are oddly insured for things like this. Theft. Damage. Always check. The worst they can say is, "Hahahahaha, no." But they could say they'd refund or replace them. I've had many of those shouldn't-but-doing-it-anyway purchases. That's what our twenties and early-thirties are for. Now, if I buy something, I wear it/use it right away, and make a point of adding it into heavy rotation (like last year's leather jacket; it's been my only coat all winter). Like I tell my friends when I hand them the gifted bottle, "Drink the champagne." It's just as delicious with a takeout Chinese chicken salad as it is with caviar. xo
Love this. After I walked out on my cheating wasband, I went on a spending binge. I had spent our entire marriage catering to his whims and paying for his crazy purchases, so I decided it was time to treat myself. I don't regret any of the things I bought, but am wondering if I'll ever wear all those shoes, costume jewelry pieces and Chico's clothing. I mean, I'm trying! But sometimes I look at this stuff and wonder WTF I was thinking. At the time, it gave me pleasure. Now I'm coasting and living with all my crazy purchases.
"Have you ever made an extravagant purchase you regret?" Yes. An email newsletter course by Kristen Roldan that required me to make payments of $500 for 3-4 months, I think? I really loved her vibe and the fact that the videos, the ones I saw, were short and quick. It looked to be a pretty comprehensive course, but, at the time, I wanted my biz newsletter to be more on the storytelling side and she wasn't teaching that. I found someone else who was teaching it that way (Sara Noel @ BTL Copy), but alas, I recently discovered that I don't want to (nor do I have the time or energy) do long-form.
This is an interesting one because it’s not a material thing but you still regret it. It got me thinking- I totally regret all the dollars I spent on advertising trying to get my self-published book off the ground. (Didn’t help much.) I learned a lot in that process though! I hope you did too. 💛

Oh man, the drone story is heartbreaking! I wish it could’ve flown itself back for repairs.

Lol, I’ve never heard your drone story, Kara. That’s rich. And trusting of your boss.

Ohh the Peloton is a great one! Steep price but it’s never bad to invest in your physical health! Love it.

Thanks Sandra! Hah, love 20’s and early 30’s comment. Spot on for me! And love the champagne idea!
But….. are you wearing em for our Junkett trip?? 😜. Love listening to you guys. And so much truth to it all !! I can picture it all. ❤️

There’s a time and a place for a spree of sorts. You nailed this one!
There is a form of liberation in purchases that do not answer to others! It’s a renaissance in a way, isn’t it??
Exactly! I buy what I want, wear what I want, do what I want.
While I bet the Chanel’s are gorgeous- you rock a flat perfectly. ❤️
You are too kind, pal!
