Butter yellow is having a serious moment. Everywhere I turn, designers, publications, bloggers, and influencers are touting it as the new perfect color: part spring vibes (white) mixed with part summer vibes (yellow) for a subtle optimism. Ideal for the current season.
News flash. You’re all late to the party. I’ve been a butter yellow vigilante (in much the same way that my sister is evidently a traffic vigilante) for decades. Now, in 2025, everyone finally wants to stop making fun of my obsession and embrace this goodness.
I don’t know exactly when my butter yellow passion developed, but suffice it to say, as far back as I’m able to remember, my dream car has been a 1969 Mustang convertible in the factory color resembling a pale yellow (what we dinosaurs used to call butter yellow). That rarity is likely never to be seen in person for me, let alone be owned. I suppose that’s why it’s called a dream car.
I also know my penchant for this color existed long before marrying my spouse at the ripe age of 24. You see, my love for—or insistence on—all things butter yellow during the arduous wedding planning process later became folklore among my friends and family.
Back in the stone ages (2008), designers weren’t exactly popping out yellow bridesmaids dresses. The colors and styles left little to be desired. My vision—that had to be executed perfectly despite limited resources and “off the rack” necessity—was something along the lines of Kate Hudson’s iconic yellow dress in How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days. Except, you guessed it, lighter.
Hours upon hours were spent in bridal boutiques all over the state of Florida looking for something that would fit the bill. I distinctly remember my mother—ordinarily having the patience of a saint—getting fed up with the butter yellow requirement. This wasn’t me being bridezilla. This was me being Kara. I had a vision of exactly what it must be, and come hell or high water, I would find it.
My sisters and friends in the bridal party hated the color yellow. One by one, they’d come out of the dressing rooms trying to hide their looks of disgust but breathing sighs of relief when they saw mine. Ugh, not the right fabric. Ugh, not the right length. UGH, bright yellow. It’s like the retailers were messing with me.
When I finally found “the one,” I was the only person in the wedding party who actually admired the dress. The poor bridesmaids were forced to wear a long, form fitting, butter yellow ensemble in June that no one believed to be flattering except yours truly. (Sound familiar? Like every rom com?)
Of course, the dresses needed matching vests for the men. And a matching cake. And let’s not forget the tablecloths (another legendary subject) and flowers and overall vibe. Must. Be. Butter. Yellow. Even the church happened to be the perfect hue.

Lucky for me, my husbo tolerates yellow quite well. After said vows, my spouse and I purchased our first home in a lovely light yellow hue. I promptly painted our room something that was meant to be butter yellow but, typical of beginner DIY woes, turned out a little darker than intended.
The list of butter yellow in my life is long, so I’ll stop belaboring the point. The message I’m trying to convey here is I’m happy, truly, that the world now sees this beauty for what she is—at least for the moment. Now, let’s spread some (muted) sunshine and share all our favorite butter yellow trends in the cawwwments!

Some catching my eye. First: A soft, buttery blanket; second: KitchenAid’s 2025 color of the year mixer or opt for less committal pot holders; third: Anthropologie bowls; fourth: even my favorite unaffordable designer Chanel is on board.
